Biomarkers of Ageing
from Molecular Biology to Clinical Perspectives
The workshop will be held from September
18th - 20th 2009 Whereas the mean life span of a population is relatively stable, on the level of the individuals, it has a big variation. Thus, the ageing rate, measured as the decline of functional capacity and stress resistance, seems to be different in every individual. Therefore, attempts have been made to analyse this individual age, the so-called biological age, in comparison to chronological age. Such biomarkers of ageing should help on the one hand to characterise this biological age and, as age is a major risk factor in many degenerative diseases, could be subsequently used on the other hand to identify individuals at high risk of developing age-associated diseases or disabilities. Although it is widely believed that such a biological age exits, it is not known how it can be measured. Beside the main theme – biomarkers of ageing - is the purpose of this meeting:
The meeting is organized in cooperation
with the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, the German Society of Cardiology
(Working Group Heart Diseases in the Elderly), the German Society of Gerontology
and Geriatrics (Section I: Experimental Gerontology) and the German Society for
Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (Working Group for the Elderly Patient in
Heart Surgery). Andreas Simm
